With only two minutes to play, both teams were fighting 

for the football. It was the last home games for the seniors

od Winston High, and they were determined to win.

to play는 two minutes를 수식하는 형용사적 용법 이다. both는 복수명사, 복수 동사 취급한다. for는 ~를 쫓아, ~를 얻기 위해 로 해석 the last는 late의 최상급으로 ' 마지막으로' 로 해석 be determined to 부정사= ~하겠다고 결심하다' 로 해석

Since it had been a close game the whole eveving, the

best players of each team hadn't left the field.

since는 '~때문에 ' 해석으로 as, because와 같다 had been ~, hadn't left~ = 과거 완료 , 그날 저녁 내내(the whole evening) 와  상응해 아슬아슬한 경기가 되어 왔다는 과거 완료형이다. each는 단수 명사 취급.

 

Once Winston High's coach finally knew that victory was 

theirs all the seniors on the sidelines were allowed to play 

for the last few seconds.

once는 접속사로 ' 일단 ~하면' 으로 해석 that은 knew의 목적절을 이끄는 접속사로 뒷문장은 완전한 문장으로 쓰임 be allowed to 부정사= ~하도록 허락을 받다. for는  '~동안 ' 이라고 해석 few+ 복수명사

One of the seniors Ethan, was especially happy. He had

never played in any of the games before. Now, Ethan

was finally getting the chance to step onto the grass.

one of the + 복수명사 + 단수 동사 = ' ~들 중 하나 '  had played 는 before 에 상응해 ' 결코 경기한 적이 없다 '로 과거 완료가 쓰임 any는 the games을 수식하지만 of 와 연결하여 쓰이기도함 was getting은 과거 진행형 to step은 the chance 를 수식하는 형용사적 용법

When the rival team dropped the ball, one of our players

recovered it and quickly ran down the field with it.

one of + 복수명사 = ~둘중에 하나 and는 병렬구조를 이루는 접속사로 receverd 와 ran 이 병렬로 같은 형태로 온다 it = the ball

Ethan ran right after him to catch up. As our player got 

closer to the end zones, he saw Ethan behind him on his

letf.

right은  after him 을 수식하는 부사로 '바로'  로 해석 him, his = one of our player to catch up = ' 따라 잡기위해 '로 해석하며 부사적 용법이다 as = ~하면서, ~할 때

Instead of running straight ahead, the player kindly passsed

the ball to Ethan so that he could score a touchdown.

instead of = ' ~대신에 ' 로 전치사 역할을 한다 of 다음에는 목적어로 반드시 동명사인 running 으로 쓰임 kindly는 passed (동사) 를 수식함으로 부사형태로 쓰임 so that = ~하도록, ~하기위해서
